Location: Rome, Italy :: essays papers
Location: Rome, Italy Architect: Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola; born 1507, died 1573. His career illustrates the rigidity of Mannerist art in the later half of 16th century. His design of Il Gesu meant that Jesuit missionaries carried copies of his design all over the world. His first major work was the villa (Rome) built for Pope Julius III, but Il Gesu was the most influential, although considered architecturally less adventurous. Vignola published his own treatise, Regola delli Clinque Ordini d'Architettura in 1562. It became the standard textbook for architectural students, mainly in France, for about three centuries and nearly two hundred editions of it are known. Towards the end of his life, he built a gateway for the Farnese Gardens in Rome. The gateway was demolished in 1880, but stones were preserved and it has been rebuilt. Builder: Giovanni Tristano Construction Date: began 1958 (factual). Resource type: Church Style/Culture: Italian Renaissance Description and Features: Il Gesu displays a tunnel-vaulted nave (about 60 feet wide) and has four chapels on each side. The end walls are aligned with the outer walls of the chapels. The tunnel vault rises above the cornice that runs from the faà §ade to the piers of the crossing. Due to the faà §ade windows and the lunettes of the tunnel-vault, the nave is brightly lit, but in contrast, the chapels are dim. The diameter of the dome is equal to the width of the nave. Vignola accomplished this by having the chapels in the form of a continuous row into the piers of the crossing. The dome seemed to rest on surrounding walls, not on the three dimensional piers. The small chapels formed a passage in-between the nave and the transept. Original Use: Il Gesu is the Roman mother-church of the Jesuit Order Construction History: On June 26, 1568 the foundation stone was laid out, although it took years to finally decide on its situation, shape and size. Nanni di Baccio Bigi had submitted a design for the church in 1550, and Michealangelo was called in to design it in 1554, but Vignola's designs were approved. The construction finally started when Cardinal Alessandro Farnese made a large financial contribution in 1586. Giovanni Tristano, a Jesuit father, and an architectural expert, who worked on other Jesuit churches prior to Il Gesu, directed the building. It is assumed that by 1571, Vignola's plans did not satisfy Tristano, because Giacomo della Porta was called to design the faà §ade.

Effects of Anthrax essays
Effects of Anthrax essays It seems like now a day there is tragedies, attacks, and new diseases that spring up constantly. Most recently, the American nation is plagued by a deadly epidemic Anthrax. Anthrax is a topic that is all over the newspapers, magazines, and television, but common people know very little of Anthraxs causes and effects. There are many myths and stories that are spread through rumors and false information. All people and especially those near at risk areas must be informed about the truth of Anthrax. Anthrax is a disease that is formed from a deadly bacterium that originates most commonly in dead animals, but unfortunately it can also be developed and produced in highly sophisticated labotories and scientific environments of that nature. Anthrax is being widely distributed in the United States of America through postal offices and governmental work areas. Not only do all people need to know about cures and vaccinations of this disease, but also background information and knowledge of this deadly disease must be widely distributed to give all people an understanding and precaution of this lethal and easily infected illness. The lethal bacterium, Bacillus anthracis, which causes the disease Anthrax, was not discovered until 1959. Anthrax can appear in humans and animals alike. It was first discovered in mysterious dead animals. At first, scientists believed that this bacterium, Bacillus anthracis, blocked the capillaries, which furthermore resulted in death. Through many experiments and observations, scientists discovered that blocked capillaries did not cause death, but the deadly and dangerous exotoxin released by Anthrax. This toxin is extremely deadly and lethal. The cause of death from this Anthrax toxin is due to lack of oxygen, respiratory shock and failure, secondary shock, cardiac arrest, and an increase of vascular permeability. Anthrax can be contracted in three different ways. First and most dea...

Self Perspective Essay Example
Self Perspective Essay Example Self Perspective Paper Self Perspective Paper The Positives and Negatives Is self- Identity created over time, or are we born with It? Self identity, also known as self concept, self perspective or self construction refers to how a person university of Texas In Austin, Texas. In their article Self Verification 360 degrees: Illuminating the Light and Dark Sides they explain the self verification theory. North and Swan explain, Self verification theory asserts that people are motivated to seek confirmation of their negative as well as positive self-views (n. Page). They also note, Because self views serve these vitally important functions, people become invested in maintaining them (n. Page. ). George Orwell is an English journalist and novelist. His book, Down and out in Paris and London, Documents the life of the lower class people in Paris and London in the 1 us. Of these people, Boris creates his self-identity through being overly optimistic, Bozo creates his self-identity through being an artist, Payday creates his-self Identity through his self-pity and Charlie is through his lies. Boris, Bozo, Payday and Charlie all do not match up with Swan and Norths self- reification theory. Then enters Boris, Boris was a Russian waiter. He is by nature overly optimistic and creates his self-identity though it. Boris explains, l have always said it, there is nothing easier to get than money (Orwell 44). ). If money was so easy to get then he wouldnt be in the situation that he is in. Most times he says things that are obviously untrue such as, Boris states, Oh we shall find something. I have got a few cards up my sleeve. There are people who owe me money, for instance-Paris is full of them (Orwell 29). If there were really people all over Paris that owed him money then e would be collecting the money. Boris also states, What things a man can do with brains! Brains will make money out of anything (Orwell 31). There he goes again with being overly optimistic he has a brain but has gone days without eating before. When Orwell first meets up with Boris one of the first few words out of his mouth was starving to death is this goes on much longer (Orwell 28). Swan and Norths self verification theory, assumes that people work to preserve their negative as well as positive self views by seeking confirmation for these self One time in particular Orwell goes into description about Boris regimen to get ready. Orwell says, He shaved without soap and with a razor- blade two months old, tied his tie so that the holes did not show, and carefully stuffed the soles of his shoes with newspaper (30). Orwell also notes, Finally when he was dressed, he produced an ink bottle and Inked the skin on his ankles where It showed through his socks (30). The fact that Boris goes to such extreme lengths to make himself look presentable says a lot about how he wants people to perceive him. He wants his self Image on the outside to look as good as possible when fledgling a Job. Other than the times he gets dressed up to look for his past mistresses and tells them about his misfortune. Orwell says, Sometimes in hopeful moments Boris spent fifty centimes on a stamp and wrote to one of his ex mistresses, asking for money'(34). Boris doesnt fit Swan and Norths theory because he doesnt try to get confirmation from people he Just does as he wants. Hes not ashamed of being poor. Bozos self-identity is created through having no self pity. He has a mangled leg and earns a little bit by drawing chalk paintings on sidewalks. He struggles inside the roll of desperate poverty so he can have some sense of dignity. He wore the usual beggars clothes but wore a collar and tie and was proud to wear it. Orwell writes, The collar a year or more old, was constantly going around the neck, and Bozo used to patch it with bits cut from the tail of his shirt so that the shirt had scarcely any tail left. (166). Orwell notes, His damaged leg kept getting worse and was going to have to be amputated one day (166). Orwell also says, With all this, he had neither fear, nor regret, nor shame, nor self pity. Orwell 166) Bozo explains, Being a beggar, he said, was not his fault (Orwell (166). Bozo cared about what others thought of him as he was constantly fixing his collar. He was also always reminding Orwell that he wasnt just someone who begged for money (167). Orwell states that, He considered himself in a class above the ordinary run of beggars, who he said, were an abject lot, without even the decency to be ungrateful (16 7). Even though Bozo was a beggar, in a way he felt he was better than all the other beggars. He had no self pity on himself. He provided a service than rather than Just a jugular beggar. The people didnt pay him to go away he got paid for his services. Bozo doesnt match up with Swan and Norths theory, Self verification theory asserts that people are motivated to seek confirmation of their negative as well as positive self-views (n. Page. ). Bozo wants people to look at the positives about him. He doesnt want people to seek confirmation on the negative views about himself. Then enters Payday, he creates his self-identity through his self pity. He was dressed better than most tramps he wore a tweed shooting Jacket and a pair of old evening trousers with the braid still on them (Orwell 149). The braid that was still on his pants in his mind was a lingering scrap of respectability he made sure when it was loose to sew it back on (Orwell 149). He tried to keep up his appearance as much as possible he carried a razor and a boot brush that he would not sell (Orwell 150). He had sold some of his other belongings such as his pocket knife and his papers but wouldnt sell his boot brush or razor. Even though Orwell says Payday was horribly ashamed being a tramp he still ad picked up all the little tricks that all tramps did (150). When they walked by a vending machine he would pull the lever to make sure that no loose change came out and he never missed a cigarette end on the ground. Even though he was horrible ashamed of being a tramp, in public he still did all these little things that tramps did. Payday doesnt fit the theory of the Texas University Professors Swan and North, Self verification assumes that people work to preserve their negative as well as positive seeking confirmation for these self views. As Orwell writes about Payday he says, The thought of his bad luck never seemed to leave him for an instant (152). Payday is always is so negative that he doesnt fit Swan and Norths theory. Payday never gives anyone anything positive to seek confirmation of; he is always talking about all the negatives in his life. Charlie is a young man who seeks his self identity through being the center of attention. Orwell explains, He was a youth of family and education who had run away from home and lived on occasional remittances (10). Charlie would bang on the zinc bar and yell for silence (96). The stories Charlie told were not always to be awaken seriously. Charlie wanted to be liked but by the public as he always wanted to be the center of attention but his stories werent any nature to be liked. Charlie says At twenty -two I am utterly worn out and finished (Orwell 10). He tries to make him sound older and worldly than he actually is. Charlie goes into his story of him drugging his brother and robbing him of all his money (Orwell 11). Then with the money he got a guide and wanted to go to the borders (Orwell 12). He basically goes on to say he paid money and got to do whatever he wanted with a girl. Which is he ultimately raped her. (Orwell 13). Charlies story was disgusting. He wanted to be the center of attention and always be telling stories. Even though everyone knew they were most likely not true. Charlie does not go with Swan and Norths self verification theory of people are motivated to seek confirmation of their negative as well as positive self- views (n. Page. ). Charlie doesnt really care what people think he Just wants to tell his stories and wants people to listen to him. In conclusion, the book Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell, ho is an English Journal and Novelist had a few interesting characters. Self-identity is created over time as we are not born with it. Boris creates his self identity through being optimistic and tries to get self verification through talking about positive things about himself as well as the negative things about himself. Bozo is a street artist also known as a Screener; he creates his self-identity by having no self pity even though his life is never going to get any better. Bozo is always looks on the bright side of everything. Payday creates his self identity though having self pity. Payday is a man who is quite ashamed of being a tramp. But he still has picked up all of the tramps little tricks throughout his time and doesnt try to hide them.. At last there is Charlie he is a young man from money and education. Charlie created his self identity through being a liar. He is also quite a story teller. Ultimately Charlie, Bozo, Payday and Boris do not match up with Swan and Norths Self Verification theory of, people are motivated to seek confirmation of their negative as well as positive self- views (n. Page). Can one change their self identity multiple times throughout their life?

Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee Celebrations
Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee Celebrations Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years and was honored by two great public commemorations of her longevity as ruler of the British Empire. Her Golden Jubilee, to mark the 50th anniversary of her reign, was observed in June 1887. European heads of state, as well as delegations of officials from throughout the empire, attended lavish events in Britain. The Golden Jubilee festivities were widely seen not only as a celebration of Queen Victoria but as an affirmation of Britains place as a global power. Soldiers from throughout the British Empire marched in processions in London. And in the distant outposts of the empire celebrations were also held. Not everyone was inclined to celebrate the longevity of Queen Victoria or the supremacy of Britain. In Ireland, there were public expressions of protest against British rule. And Irish Americans held their own public gatherings to denounce British oppression in their homeland. Ten years later, Victorias Diamond Jubilee celebrations were held to mark Victorias 60th anniversary on the throne. The 1897 events were distinctive as they seemed to mark the end of an era, as they were the last great assemblage of European royalty. Preparations for Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee As the 50th anniversary of Queen Victorias reign approached, the British government felt that a monumental celebration was in order. She had become queen in 1837, at the age of 18, when the monarchy itself had seemed to be coming to an end. She had successfully restored the monarchy to where it occupied a preeminent place in British society. And by any accounting, her reign had been successful. Britain, by the 1880s, stood astride much of the world. And despite small-scale conflicts in Afghanistan and Africa, Britain had essentially been at peace since the Crimean War three decades earlier. There was also a feeling that Victoria deserved a great celebration as she had never celebrated her 25th anniversary on the throne. Her husband, Prince Albert, had died young, in December 1861. And the celebrations which likely would have occurred in 1862, which would have been her Silver Jubilee, were simply out of the question. Indeed, Victoria became fairly reclusive after Alberts death, and when she did appear in public, she would be dressed in widows black. In early 1887 the British government began making preparations for the Golden Jubilee. Many Events Preceded Jubilee Day in 1887 The date of large public events was to be June 21, 1887, which would be the first day of the 51st year of her reign. But a number of associated events began in early May. Delegates from British colonies, including Canada and Australia, gathered and met with Queen Victoria on May 5, 1887, at Windsor Castle. For the next six weeks, the queen participated in a number of public events, including helping to lay the cornerstone for a new hospital. At one point in early May, she expressed curiosity about an American show then touring England, Buffalo Bills Wild West Show. She attended a performance, enjoyed it, and later met cast members. The queen traveled to one of her favorite residences, Balmoral Castle in Scotland, to celebrate her birthday on May 24, but planned to return for London for the major events which would take place close to the anniversary of her accession, June 20. The Golden Jubilee Celebrations The actual anniversary of Victorias accession to the throne, June 20, 1887, began with a private commemoration. Queen Victoria, with her family, had breakfast at Frogmore, near the mausoleum of Prince Albert. She returned to Buckingham Palace, where an enormous banquet was held. Members of various European royal families attended, as did diplomatic representatives. The following day, June 21, 1887, was marked with lavish public spectacle. The queen traveled by a procession through the streets of London to Westminster Abbey. According to a book published the following year, the queens carriage was accompanied by a bodyguard of seventeen princes in military uniform, superbly mounted and wearing their jewels and orders. The princes were from Russia, Britain, Prussia, and other European nations. The role of India in the British Empire was emphasized by having a troop of Indian cavalry in the procession close to the queens carriage. Ancient Westminster Abbey had been prepared, as galleries of seats had been built to accommodate 10,000 invited guests. The service of thanksgiving was marked by prayers and music performed by the abbeys choir. That night, illuminations lit the skies of England. According to one account, On rugged cliffs and beacon hills, on mountain peaks and lofty heaths and commons, great bonfires blazed. The next day a celebration for 27,000 children was held in Londons Hyde Park. Queen Victoria paid a visit to the Childrens Jubilee. All the children attending were given a Jubilee Mug designed by the Doulton company. Some Protested the Celebrations of Queen Victorias Reign Not everyone was favorably impressed by the lavish celebrations honoring Queen Victoria. The New York Times reported that a large gathering of Irish men and women in Boston had protested the plan to hold a celebration of Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee at Faneuil Hall. The celebration at Faneuil Hall in Boston was held on June 21, 1887, despite pleas to the city government to block it. And celebrations were also held in New York City and other American cities and towns. In New York, the Irish community held its own large meeting at Cooper Institute on June 21, 1887. A detailed account in the New York Times was headlined: Irelands Sad Jubilee: Celebrating in Mourning and Bitter Memories. The New York Times story described how the capacity crowd of 2,500, in a hall decorated with black crepe, listened attentively to speeches denouncing British rule in Ireland and the actions of the British government during the Great Famine of the 1840s. Queen Victoria was criticized by one speaker as Irelands tyrant.

History - Waiting for Macedonia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
History - Waiting for Macedonia - Essay Example Macedonian men and women donââ¬â¢t necessarily feel a kinship tie to their land, unlike Bosnians. Changes experienced by the young female engineers in Skopje include the fact that they feel more liberated to do as they please, and less inhibited. Young modern socialist women in Macedonia are classified on the upper level of the social strata in comparison to Albanian women of the village, who are sometimes pillaged by war, adversity, and infirmity. Unlike women in the European Union, those from Macedonia and Albania are generally regarded as lower-class ââ¬â but that might be because the countries that they are from in Southeastern Europe are less highly-regarded due to their lower socioeconomic status. Another personal identity that is portrayed in the book is religion. Religion is more relegated to a status that is separated from the state in Macedonia, and people learn to get along with each other even though they are from different religious backgrounds. Religion, in the m ovie, is portrayed as a necessary part of life. In Bosnia, everyone is split up into factions. It might have had a lot to do with the fact that in the early ââ¬Ë90s everyone in the region had to at least hear about, if not deal with, the Bosnian War. The Bosnian War divided people into three distinct groups: the Bosnian Muslims; the Orthodox Christian Serbians (also known as Serbs); and the Catholic Croatians (also known as Croats). The Croatians were pitted against the Bosnians by the Serbs. But basically, the Serbians were persecuting the Bosnians based on the fact that they were Muslims. President Bill Clinton finally decided to intervene in the Bosnian conflict in order to prevent an even larger genocide from taking place. To be Muslim in Bosnia meant to be the oppressed. To be a Croatian Catholic meant to be caught in the middle between a centuries-old fight between the Orthodox Christian Serbs and the Bosnian Muslims. National Identities Both the book and the film analyze d ifferent elements of national identity as well. Classifications of national identity in Yugoslavia during the existence of the country were never completely solidified because everyone came from different ethnic backgrounds. This only made allegiance to a nationality more difficult to believe in. The uncertainties of life after Yugoslavia, however, were somehow easier to deal with than the fact that much national pride was never lost on many Yugoslavians who were able to assimilate by ethnic groups. Religion can sometimes pose as nationality in the sense that, if someone is a Muslim, they might automatically assume that they are Bosnian. Thus, in a sense, in that region of the world oneââ¬â¢s religious identity gets fused with a nationality even though that may not reflect the reality of an individual. In a similar manner ââ¬â to put it in another way ââ¬â many people also assume that someone whose religion is Judaism is necessarily an Israeli, but thatââ¬â¢s not absol utely true. Nor is it true that someone who is an Israeli is necessarily Jewish ââ¬âactually, it is the converse. Nothing can be assumed or presumed. While someone may be ethnically Jewish, they may not be a Jewish national (from Israel), and nothing guarantees that someoneââ¬â¢s religion is Judaism unless proven otherwise. Therefore, nationality, ethnicity, race, and religion, for some Jewish people, are all one and the same. But certain people do differentiate between
